Passage 4 (from pages 20-21)

Abby and I continued to journey about the event. We arrived at a booth that sold some prepared hot foods and other snacks. I spent most of the remaining coins that I had on snacks for her and I. Afterwards, we sat down to eat the foods, while watching the people and the event. While doing so, I soon noticed that an attractive gentleman, about my sister’s age, was sitting at a table nearby, and he was staring at us and smiling amiably. After he saw me looking at him, he continued to look at Abby as if trying to get her attention. I brought the matter to Abby’s attention, talking quietly so others wouldn’t hear me.

“Where?” she asked me nonchalantly.

“Right over there,” I said to her, secretly pointing at the fellow.

She discretely turned to look at him and then turned back facing towards me. She was now displaying a happy smile on her face, but then soon stopped smiling and continued to eat her food.

“So?” I inquired.

“Hm, he’s very handsome. Actually, he looks familiar, but I can’t remember where I’ve seen him before,” she replied.

The gentleman stood up and started walking over to us. “He’s coming over here,” I said to her.

Her eyes widened, and she gasped and smiled in surprise and excitement. She then exhaled, and quickly afterwards she ceased smiling and was now appearing to be indifferent and overall aloof.

The fellow arrived. He was now standing at our table, and he was smiling at us. “Hello, there, my name is Colton. May I sit?” he said to us.

“Yes,” I replied to him with friendliness, but at the same time, Abby said, “No, you may not. We’re reserving this table for our family.”

The gentleman smiled even more so as if amused by her attitude. “I don’t think they would mind if I sat here for a moment, would they?” he said to her.

“Maybe they would,” she replied to him. “Besides, why do you want to sit here with us? There are plenty of seats over there.”

He kept silent and only looked into her eyes as he continued to smile.

She soon smiled in return, and then said to him, “I suppose it’s alright. You may sit down.”

The fellow sat down accordingly. “I’m Abigail, and this is Rosalinde, my sister,” she said to him, introducing us.

“Very nice to meet you,” he replied, speaking to both of us. He then began a conversation with Abby, and she responded as if interested. From there, they continued in conversation, and I kept mostly silent, just thinking to myself as I stared about into the environment.

Hm, she had introduced us as “Abigail” and “Rosalinde,” I pondered. It was her way of telling him that she thinks of herself and me as beautiful and elegant, and that he should treat us accordingly. I thought it to be rather intelligent of her.

On occasion, my family referred to me as Rosalinde, but I preferred to be called Lina.
